Zero-Click Search era: How can you drive traffic when Google doesn’t give you the click?

In SEO, we’re currently facing quite an interesting paradox. The better you optimize your content, the more likely it is that Google will “appropriate” it. The phenomenon of Zero-Click Search isn’t new, but with the rise of AI, it has now reached a scale that gives real cause for concern.

Google has gradually transformed its search results pages. Featured snippets, various knowledge panels, AI-generated content, and instant information blocks now dominate the screen.

As a result, users are increasingly getting their answers directly on the search results page, without needing to click through to any website. This shift is fundamentally rewriting everything we thought we knew about search engine optimization and demands a new strategic approach—unless we’re willing to disappear into digital oblivion. (And why would we want that?)

If your competitors are still doing SEO the “old-school” way, then it’s time for you to discover the techniques that will help you successfully maintain your organic traffic—even in the era of Zero-Click Search.

What is Zero-Click Search and why is it becoming an increasing problem?

When someone types a query into Google, one of two things can happen: either they click on a result and leave the search page, or they get the answer right then and there—and don’t go any further.

Google increasingly prefers the second option. The search results page displays more and more “ready-made” information so that users don’t need to click any further.

These can include:

  • Featured Snippets – These are the small “boxes” that provide a direct answer to a query (e.g., for the question “What is SEO?”, Google displays a concise explanation).
  • Knowledge Panels – These typically provide concise information about companies, celebrities, or concepts directly on the search results page.
  • Quick Answers – For queries like the weather, currency exchange rates, or other specific data, Google instantly displays the result right on the search page.
  • People Also Ask – These are expandable question-and-answer boxes that provide additional information and often deliver the desired answers without the need to click through to other websites.

And here comes the bad news: according to a study by Rand Fishkin’s SparkToro, over 65% of Google searches end with zero clicks. In other words, out of 100 searches, more than 65 users leave without visiting a single website. That’s a massive problem—especially if you’re a website owner.

How can you still win in this situation?

Google is a profit-driven company—it has always done what’s best for itself and what brings in the most revenue.

So, we need to adapt to rapidly changing strategies—if Google doesn’t give us the click, we have to find other ways to attract the visitor ourselves.

Back in the day, a few good headlines and a couple of blog posts were enough to drive loads of traffic. But today, that’s nowhere near sufficient. We have to think much harder about where we can “catch” people—before Google answers for us.

Winning SEO Strategy in the Era of Search-Click Search

The biggest players who remain unaffected by Zero-Click Search — but how do they do it?

Take HubSpot, for example. Their content is so long and detailed that Google can only pull a small snippet — to get the full article (which actually answers the question in depth), users have to click through. If someone searches for “What is inbound marketing?”, the first couple of sentences appear in the snippet, but the practical, usable examples are only found within the full article.

Another great example is Healthline and WebMD. If you type in “What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?” , you’ll get a quick answer. But if you want to dive deeper into the topic—like finding out what can help lower blood pressure—you’ll have to click through to the article.

Moz and Ahrefs use a different trick: they intentionally craft the text that appears in the snippet to feel like an unfinished sentence. In such cases, you get a teaser—but to actually read the full sentence, you have to click through to the article. For example: “The three most important types of backlinks are…” — and that’s it. If you want to know what the three types are, you have to keep reading.

Build a brand

One of the best ways to combat Zero-Click Search is to build a brand that people search for directly. In other words, instead of relying on generic keywords like “best pizza place in Budapest,” you want people to specifically search for “XY Pizzeria.” This means your focus shouldn’t be just on Google—you need to pay attention to social media, TikTok, YouTube, podcasts, and even offline channels too.

At the same time, this sends a strong brand signal to Google as well, helping to keep us in a strong ranking position.

TikTok, Instagram, and even forums like Reddit can make a big difference too.

Social media platforms and forums like Reddit or Quora are increasingly functioning as search engines. Why? Because people love real-life experiences and advice. These platforms offer an ideal space for that—and what’s more, excerpts from them are now showing up more frequently in Google’s SERPs (search results pages).

TikTok is already registering over 3 billion (!) searches per day worldwide. And let’s be honest—people tend to spend way more time on this platform than they do on a typical Google search.

So, if Google turns off the tap, we need to get creative on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or even Pinterest. We have to show up with short, concise content that answers exactly the kinds of questions our target audience is asking.

YouTube SEO

We’re treating YouTube separately—and for good reason: it’s Google’s own platform. People still love longer-form videos, and it continues to drive a significant amount of click-throughs.

If you upload a well-optimized video, it won’t just rank well on YouTube—it will also appear prominently on Google’s search results pages.

Influencer marketing

Like it or not, the influencer market is still booming—because their audiences follow them almost blindly, and the traffic they generate comes directly. When an influencer recommends you, you’re not just getting traffic—you’re gaining instant trust, too.

Keep them on your own platform!

And once someone lands on your website, it’s definitely worth getting them to subscribe to your newsletter.

With a good lead magnet—like a free PDF, checklist, or exclusive content—people are willing to give you their email address, allowing you to connect with them directly and bypass the issues caused by Google’s Zero-Click Search.

Summary

Google is already using AI-based search systems. Gemini and other AI-generated answer engines will take away even more traffic from traditional websites—and that’s something we simply can’t prevent.

That’s why SEO needs to be redefined: from now on, brand building and community development are the keys. If people search specifically for your name, not even the smartest AI can bypass you.

In the next two years, the key question won’t be who ranks first on Google—it’ll be who users are searching for directly. If you don’t start preparing for this now, it might be too late to catch up two years from now.
